People who ask for the “best time for Umrah” usually mean three different things. When are there fewer people? When is it less hot? And when can we actually leave, with work, school and parents' health in the picture?
This page answers each question with the data we have, and says plainly where the data stops. It does not rank the nights of Ramadan or tell you which part of the month is best spiritually: for that, see our sister notebook on Ramadan, and for questions of religious practice, ask an imam or scholar you trust.
When is Umrah least crowded?
The honest answer is that the official figures do not show a quiet period. They show large numbers all year, with Ramadan above the rest.
The Saudi General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) publishes Umrah figures by quarter. In the first quarter of 2025, 15,222,497 people performed Umrah10. In the first quarter of 2026, the figure was 15,233,767, including 5,769,271 who came from abroad, according to Siasat, citing GASTAT1.
Two points help you read these numbers:
- They include people living in Saudi Arabia. In the 2026 quarter, most performers were not foreign visitors: those who came from abroad were the smaller share, according to Siasat, citing GASTAT1. Residents can go to Makkah on a weekend or for a single day, so the Haram can be busy even when international flights are not full.
- The first quarter contains Ramadan. In 2026, Saudi Arabia set the first day of Ramadan 1447 on 18 February 202611. A quarterly total therefore mixes ordinary weeks with the busiest weeks of the year.
What we do not have is an official, month-by-month series for a full year. Without it, any page that names “the quietest month” is guessing. We would rather tell you that, and give you the signals we do have.
What happens when the season opens in summer?
The Umrah season for pilgrims from abroad follows an official calendar. For the 1448 season, visas and arrivals opened on 31 May 2026, and Nusuk permits and entry to Makkah on 1 June 20264.
The opening is busy. From 15 Dhul Hijjah 1447 to the end of Muharram 1448, 931,500 pilgrims entered Saudi Arabia on Umrah visas, up 22.5% on a year earlier, and more than 1.27 million pilgrims from abroad came in total5. About 75% of them arrived by air5.
For a traveller from Morocco, that has two practical consequences:
- Flights to Jeddah and Madinah are shared with a large international flow. Book the flight early and compare routes; our page on Umrah flights from Morocco lists the carriers and cities we can source.
- The opening weeks are summer weeks. They suit travellers who can only leave in the summer holidays, and who are ready to organise every day around the heat (see below).
Why is Ramadan the peak?
Because it is when the largest number of people want to be there, from Morocco and from everywhere else.
For Moroccan pilgrims, the pattern is old. Before the pandemic, Umrah drew more than 100,000 Moroccan pilgrims a year, nearly 60% of them during Ramadan, according to Challenge12. Seats on direct flights and rooms near the Haram are therefore taken earlier for Ramadan than for any other period.
On the ground, the strain is visible in transport. During the last ten days of Ramadan 2026, Saudi Arabia Railways raised the number of daily Haramain train trips to more than 140, according to TradeArabia, citing SPA9. More trains help, but they also tell you how many people are moving between Makkah and Madinah at that time.
For Ramadan 1448, the Umm al-Qura calendar puts the first day on Monday 8 February 2027 (estimate, subject to moon sighting)8. If you choose Ramadan, plan the trip around the season's official cut-off dates: the last Umrah visas of the 1448 season are issued on 9 March 20274. The full list of dates, and what each one means for a Ramadan trip, is kept by our Ramadan sister notebook's guide to the season's visa dates4.
Which Moroccan school breaks work for families?
Morocco's 2026-2027 school calendar is set by ministerial decision 047.26 of 3 July 2026, with holidays of 8 days2. The October break (18-25 October 2026) is too close to plan for now2. Here is how the remaining breaks sit against the 1448 Umrah season4.
December, 6-13 December 20262. Inside the season, in winter, and well before Ramadan. For a first family Umrah with children, this is the most comfortable window we can point to. A week is short once the two flights are counted, so a direct flight matters more than usual.
Mid-year, 24-31 January 20272. Also inside the season and still in winter. It ends roughly a week before the expected start of Ramadan on 8 February 2027 (estimate, subject to moon sighting)8. Expect demand to be rising as Ramadan approaches.
Spring, 21-28 March 20272. Very tight. The last visa of the season is issued on 9 March 2027 and the last entry into Saudi Arabia is 23 March 20274. A family would need the visa in hand by then and would have to land in the first days of the break4.
May, 9-16 May 20272. Outside the 1448 Umrah season, which ends with the last departure on 7 April 20274. The calendar of the next season has not been published.
Route
- Start from the school dates, not from the airline sale: the break decides the window.
- Check the season calendar against that window, especially near the end of the season.
- Ask the doctor for older parents and young children before choosing summer.
- Book the flight once the window is clear, then the hotel by walking distance.
Travelling with a parent who walks slowly changes the choice more than the crowds do. Our guide to Umrah with elderly parents goes through the trip step by step.
Heat: what can we say, and what can't we?
We can say what everyone who has been there knows: summer in Makkah and Madinah is very hot, and winter is gentler. We cannot give you temperatures, because we have not yet approved an official source for them, and we prefer no number to an unchecked one.
What we can say with sources:
- The Saudi Ministry of Health's Umrah health rules apply in the cities it calls the “Umrah areas”: Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah and Taif13. Those are the cities where you will walk, wait and queue.
- The 1448 season opened on 31 May 20264, so its first, very busy weeks are summer weeks5.
In practice, heat changes how a day is organised more than whether you can go. Long walks move to the early morning and the evening, the middle of the day is spent indoors, and the distance between the hotel and the Haram becomes a health question. Our heat safety guide covers the plan, and what hotel distance means day to day explains why a few hundred extra metres count in summer.
So which period suits which traveller?
| If you are… | The window our sources point to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A family with school-age children | December or late January2 | Inside the season, in winter, outside Ramadan |
| Travelling with an elderly parent | Winter, outside Ramadan | Gentler days and smaller transport peaks; check with the doctor |
| Set on Ramadan | Ramadan, with the season's last visa date in mind (9 March 2027)4 | The peak: book early and expect full trains and hotels |
| Free only in summer | The season opening (from 31 May 2026)4 | Possible, with a day plan built around the heat |
None of these is a rule. They are the windows the published figures and calendars support today. Your own constraints (leave days, a parent's health, a child's exams) come first.
To confirm before you leave
- A month-by-month count of pilgrims for a full year: the GASTAT figures we hold are quarterly, and only for the first quarter of recent years.
- Temperatures by month in Makkah and Madinah: no approved official source in our register yet. Two Saudi heat-safety notices are waiting for review before we use them.
- The next season's calendar, which decides next summer's travel: not published yet.
- How many Moroccans travel each month, outside Ramadan: no recent official figure in our sources.
- The exact start of Ramadan 1448 in Saudi Arabia and in Morocco: it depends on the sighting of the crescent; today's date is an estimate, subject to moon sighting8.
Next in the notebook: once the dates are clear, choose the flight, then pack the bag.
